Did you know you can ‘grill’ chicken thighs in your air fryer in as little as 15 minutes? This method of grilling chicken is hands-off. You’ll get the juiciest, tastiest chicken to serve with potatoes and a salad, as a burger or wrap, or in whichever way you choose.

All you’ll need is a few skinless, boneless chicken thighs, some basic dried herbs and spices, and a bit of olive oil. Dinner doesn’t get much easier than this!

Sometimes people don’t believe I create recipes for a living, because the meals I make most often can hardly be called recipes at all.

This ‘recipe’ for air fryer grilled chicken thighs falls firmly into this category. Weeknights are busy in our house, with homework, afterschool activities etc, and the last thing I want to do is babysit meat on a grill.

Luckily, my air fryer cooks skinless boneless chicken thighs for me perfectly in around just 15 minutes. Sometimes I turn it over half way through cooking, but even this isn’t really necessary as the air circulates all around it.

Here’s a quick summary of what I love about this idea:

  • 5 minutes’ prep. All I have to do is brush the thighs with a little oil and roll them in whatever herbs and spices I want to use.
  • Endlessly customizable. I’ve suggested a simple all-purpose seasoning mix (you can even make this ahead). But it’s so easy to customize the flavors according to what you have in the pantry, or what you enjoy.
  • Only around 15 to 17 minutes’ cook time. Why not use the time to prep a couple of simple sides to go with your chicken? You’ll find plenty of ideas below!
  • Endlessly adaptable! I’ve served this chicken with sides, in a burger, and sliced up in a Greek style gyro wrap. I’m sure you can think of even more ways to use it!

About the ingredients

All ingredients needed to airfry chicken thighs including boneless skinless chicken thighs, a mixture of seasoning and olive oil for brushing.
  • Skinless boneless chicken thighs: The average suggested cooking time is based on using medium sized chicken thighs. If they are larger, that’s OK but you’ll have to add a few extra minutes onto the cook time.
  • Olive oil: Half to one tablespoon is all you’ll need. You can use a different kind of oil if you prefer, of course.
  • Basic dried herbs and spices: My favorites to use for a perfect grilled flavor are paprika (regular, sweet or smoked), cumin (for a little smokiness), mixed Italian herbs (or a mix of Mediterranean style herbs such as basil, oregano, thyme, marjoram), onion and garlic powder, and salt and pepper. Feel free to skip any you don’t have or like and/or substitute with other dried herbs. It’s really hard to go wrong!

How to grill chicken thighs in your air fryer

It’s so easy! This is all you do:

Put the chicken in a large dish or on a plate. Brush all over with olive oil.

Sprinkle the seasoning mix all over the chicken.

I usually use some kitchen tongs to turn the chicken over so that all sides are generously covered.

Then lift the seasoned chicken into the air fryer basket. My small air fryer fits around 4 medium sized thighs at a time, but a larger air fryer will take more.

Air fry the chicken for 15 to 17 minutes at 355F/180C. If you like, you can turn it over half way through cooking, but it’s not essential.

If you preheat the air fryer, 15 minutes will probably do it. If not, you might need 2 or 3 more minutes. I find it easy to see if the chicken is done when I cut into it, but feel free to use a meat thermometer if you want to be sure.

This is what it looks like when done – golden, juicy, and absolutely delicious!

Helen’s Top Tips

  • If you don’t already have some, get yourself a few pairs of kitchen tongs in different sizes. This way you can use one when the chicken is raw and a clean pair when it’s cooked, without having to worry about cleaning mid-recipe.
  • You might also wish to use a meat thermometer to help you to know for sure when the chicken is cooked enough.
  • Make the recipe even easier by preparing the all-purpose seasoning mix ahead of time and keeping it in the pantry to use on chicken or… in so many other ways!
  • Here are some ideas for alternative seasonings you can add to vary the recipe: a little lemon zest or lemon pepper seasoning, a pinch of fennel seeds, a small pinch of chili flakes or cayenne pepper for a spicier version, half to one tablespoon of brown sugar for a little sweetness. Or try rubbing the chicken thighs with a bit of honey before rolling in the spice mixture.

Recipe FAQs

Can I also cook the chicken thighs in my regular oven?

Yes, of course. It will take 35 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the thighs. Cook them on a lined baking sheet, turning over half way through cooking. The good thing is that skinless boneless chicken thighs usually stay moist and juicy even if you cook them for a couple of extra minutes.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer?

You can, but you don’t have to. I find that if I do preheat it for 2 to 3 minutes, the cook time is slightly less – say 15 minutes compared to 17 to 18 minutes if I don’t preheat the air fryer. If you like, check with a meat thermometer to make sure that the chicken is done. The temperature in the thickest part of a thigh should be at least 165°F (74°C).

Can I air fry the chicken thighs straight from frozen?

You can in fact air fry chicken thighs straight from frozen with tweaks to the temperature and cooking time. However, I don’t recommend it for this recipe, since the seasoning might not stick to the chicken properly when it’s still frozen.

How long will the cooked chicken keep in the fridge?

The air-fried chicken will keep in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days if stored in an airtight container. Try reheating in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes for the best texture, or you can cover and microwave on reduced power until hot again. You can also freeze any leftovers for 2 to 3 months.

Easy Air Fryer Grilled Chicken Thighs

If you've got skinless boneless chicken thighs and some basic herbs and spices in the pantry, as well as a couple of simple sides, you've got an easy but delicious dinner! This is my go-to simple baked chicken thigh recipe. It takes just 15 minutes to cook in your air fryer, for a perfect 'grilled chicken' result.
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 15 minutes
Total: 20 minutes
Servings: 2 to 4

Ingredients

  • 4 medium skinless boneless chicken thighs
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin, (optional)
  • teaspoons mixed Italian herbs , e.g. basil, oregano, thyme (or whichever dried herbs you have)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, (approximately, to brush over the chicken to help the herbs/spices to stick)

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 355F/180C for 3 minutes (if you like – you don't have to preheat it). Meanwhile, mix all the spices and herbs together.
1 teaspoon paprika, ¼ teaspoon cumin, 2½ teaspoons mixed Italian herbs, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, ¾ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon pepper
  • Put the chicken thighs into a wide bowl or on a plate. Brush them all over with the olive oil.
4 medium skinless boneless chicken thighs, 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Sprinkle the herb and spice mixture all over the chicken (you can turn it with tongs).
  • Place the chicken into the air fryer basket. Leave a little space between each so that the air can circulate all around. Air fry for 15 to 17 minutes (turning half way through if you like), or until the juices run clear. Alternatively, you can check that the internal temperature is 165F or 75C in the thickest part.

Notes

Regular oven instructions: If you prefer to use your regular oven, bake on a lined baking sheet (at the same temperature as for the air fryer version) for around 35 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the thighs.
Adapting the recipe: No garlic powder? Don’t like cumin? No problem! Just skip them, or add a bit of lemon zest, lemon pepper seasoning or a pinch of chili flakes instead.
You can also rub the chicken thighs with a bit of honey before rolling in the spice mixture for a delicious hit of sweetness.
Serving ideas: air fryer sweet potato wedges, regular potato wedges, Greek salad, parmentier potatoes, Greek lemon rice, olive oil toasts, or anything you like! You can also slice the chicken and serve it in wraps, sandwiches and in bowls.

  1. As soon as I can score some thighs (as scarce as hens teeth!) they’ll be in my oven, sounds good.

    1. There were quite a lot of thighs in stock at about 10am this morning at Coles, Ann. Last week we couldn’t get any though. What’s hard to get seems to vary from day to day! Hope you manage to find some!
