There’s no doubt about it, the air fryer is my new favorite appliance for cooking chicken legs! In just 30 minutes, you can enjoy juicy, smoky, perfectly seasoned air fryer BBQ chicken legs with irresistibly crispy skin.

Enjoy as they are, or smother with sticky BBQ sauce towards the end of cooking.

Why you’ll love them

This recipe for air fryer BBQ chicken legs is fast becoming one of my favorite dinners to make midweek. They are equally as tasty as these air fryer grilled chicken thighs or this air fryer whole rotisserie chicken. But chicken legs (chicken drumsticks) are just so much more affordable!

If we cook a whole chicken in our house, there’s sometimes a squabble over who gets the legs. This way, everyone can enjoy perfectly seasoned chicken legs with the most irresistible crispy skin (as we all know, the air fryer rocks when it comes to crisping things up!).

Here’s a quick summary of what I think you’ll love:

  • 5 minutes prep. The simple herb and spice seasoning takes just minutes to prepare and sprinkle all over the chicken.
  • Minimal effort. You’ll need to allow up to 30 minutes for the legs to cook through properly, but this part is hands-off. No babysitting a grill!
  • Juicy, tender, crispy chicken. With minimal effort. Need I say more?
  • Versatile flavors: The mix of smoked paprika, garlic, onion and cumin brings a smoky BBQ flavor. However, this recipe is so easy to adapt according to what flavors you have in your pantry!
  • Choice of two ways to serve. Serve with just the tasty seasoning on the outside, or brush over with BBQ sauce just before the end for a sticky, even-more-delicious finish. Your choice!

About the ingredients

All the ingredients needed to make air fryer BBQ chicken legs including chicken legs, a mixture of seasoning, and olive oil.

Chicken legs: No rules here really, just grab chicken legs (you may prefer to call them chicken drumsticks!) from the store. You’ll want ones with the skin still on. Medium sized works best. If they are particularly large, that’s OK, you just might need to increase the cooking time a bit.

Olive oil: Around half a tablespoon for each 4 chicken legs. This is simply for brushing over the skin to help the flavors to stick and the skin to crisp. Of course, feel free to use any kind of oil.

Seasoning: My go-to seasonings for these incredible BBQ-style chicken legs include smoked paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, and mustard powder for smoky, sweet and savory depth of flavor. Salt and black pepper bring everything together.

If you like, try adding in some dried herbs such as thyme, basil, oregano, or mixed Italian herbs, a small pinch of fennel seeds, or chili flakes or cayenne pepper for a little heat.

How to make air fryer BBQ chicken legs

Firstly, you can preheat your air fryer for a few minutes to 390F/200C. Meanwhile, brush the chicken legs all over with olive oil.

Now sprinkle the mixture of spices and seasoning all over the drumsticks. You can use kitchen tongs, if you have them, to turn the meat until all sides are covered.

Now place the legs into the air fryer basket. I have a fairly small air fryer and I can fit 3 to 4 in.

Air fry for about 25 to 30 minutes, turning half way through cooking. The skin will be crisped and deeply golden, but of course not burnt.

Helen’s Top Tips

  • Consider blotting the chicken drumsticks with kitchen paper to completely dry them before brushing with oil – for extra crisp!
  • Keep an eye on the chicken towards the end of the cooking time. Deeply golden and crisped is the aim, but not burnt. If you can, check the internal temperature in the deepest part of the leg (without touching the bone). It should be at least 165°F (74°C).
  • If you like, you can brush the legs generously with BBQ sauce a few minutes before the end of the cooking time. This way, you’ll get extra sticky deliciousness, but the skin will still be crispy.

Recipe FAQs

Does this recipe work for other cuts of chicken?

Yes, it does, but you’ll need to adapt the cooking time. For example, you could use the same recipe for chicken wings but you would reduce the cook time to around 20 to 25 minutes. You’ll probably need to cook bone in skin on chicken thighs for 30 to 35 minutes. Here’s a similar recipe for air fried skinless boneless chicken thighs. The golden rule is to use a meat thermometer to check that the internal temperature is at least 165°F (74°C).

How do I store them?

Store any leftover chicken in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. You can reheat them in your air fryer at 350F/175C for a few minutes to restore that crispiness.

Can I cook them in my regular oven instead?

Yes! If you prefer, you can bake these chicken legs in the oven at 390F/200C for 35-45 minutes, turning halfway through. They’ll be just as tasty!

Air Fryer BBQ Chicken Legs (So Easy And Crispy!)

Who doesn't love a crispy-skinned, deliciously seasoned chicken leg? And now you can make them perfectly in your air fryer in around 30 minutes. No need to babysit them on a grill, just coat in simple flavors you already have in your pantry, then let the air fryer do the work. You can either enjoy them as they are, with any sides you like, or brush with BBQ sauce just before the end of cooking.
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 30 minutes
Total: 35 minutes
Servings: 2 to 4

Ingredients

  • 4 medium chicken legs, (drumsticks) skin on bone in
  • ½ tablespoon olive oil, (approximately, to brush over the chicken to help the herbs/spices to stick)
  • ½ tablespoon brown sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon paprika
  • teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon mustard powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

Optional last-minute glaze

  • cup BBQ sauce, (any you like)

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 390F/200C for 3 minutes. Meanwhile, mix all the seasoning together.
½ tablespoon brown sugar, ¾ teaspoon paprika, ⅓ teaspoon cumin, ¼ teaspoon mustard powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ⅔ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • Brush the chicken legs all over with the olive oil.
4 medium chicken legs, ½ tablespoon olive oil
  • Sprinkle the mixed seasoning all over the chicken (you can turn it with tongs so that it gets really well coated on all sides).
  • Place the chicken into the air fryer basket. Leave a little space between each leg so that the air can circulate all around. Air fry for 25 to 30 minutes (turning half way through if you like), or until the skin is golden and crisp, the juices run clear, and/or the internal temperature is 165F or 75C in the thickest part. If you like, you can brush the chicken with your favorite BBQ sauce for the last 3 to 5 minutes of cooking for a sticky, even tastier version.
    ⅓ cup BBQ sauce

Notes

Note on nutrition info: Note that this includes the addition of the BBQ sauce, and is based on 2 chicken legs per person. Obviously if you only serve 1 drumstick to each person, and skip the BBQ sauce, these values will be different.
Regular oven instructions: If you prefer to use your regular oven, you can bake on a lined baking sheet (at the same temperature as for the air fryer version) for around 35 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the chicken legs.
Serving ideas: air fryer sweet potato wedges, regular potato wedges, Greek salad, parmentier potatoes, Greek lemon rice, olive oil toasts, or anything you like!
For extra crisp skin: Consider blotting the drumsticks with kitchen paper to get rid of any excess moisture before brushing with the oil.
