With a few years of owning an air fryer under my belt, it’s these perfectly crisped and seasoned on the outside, creamy and sweet on the inside sweet potato wedges that I’ve found myself making most often in it. In just 20 minutes, you can have an easy appetizer to serve with dips, or a crowd pleasing side dish that goes with almost any main.

Why you’ll love them
One of the things I love to make most in my air fryer are these quick and crispy sweet potato wedges. We enjoy homemade wedges often (they’re one of the few things we can all agree we like to eat), but these make a tasty, colorful and nutritious change.
I most often serve them when I’m in a hurry to get dinner on the table midweek – as a quick and healthy side dish – with air fryer rotisserie chicken, for example. But they can also make a perfect appetizer or snack with dips. We love to dunk our wedges into cooling sour cream and zingy sweet chili sauce!
It takes just a few minutes to slice the sweet potatoes into wedges – you can even leave on the skin if you like. Then toss them in olive oil and some light but tasty seasoning. Throw them into the air fryer for around 15 minutes and that’s it, they’re done! Much faster than in your regular oven but with the same crispy and delicious result.
Here’s a quick summary of what you’ll love:
- Super quick and easy. A few minutes to slice the potatoes, and around 15 minutes to roast.
- Nicely crispy on the outside, sweet and tender on the inside.
- Lightly seasoned to suit both the kids and the grownups!
- Quick and easy side dish, or appetizer or snack with dips.

About the ingredients
You’ll find a full list of ingredients with amounts in the recipe card below. But here’s a summary of what you need to know.
Aren’t the recipes that get you the tastiest result with just a few simple ingredients just the best? This recipe for sweet potato air fryer wedges is a great example!
This is all you’ll need:
Sweet potatoes: Use orange-fleshed sweet potatoes for best results (they’re just sweeter than the white or purple-fleshed varieties). Luckily, it’s the orange ones that you see most often in the supermarket.
To serve 4 to 6 people, you’ll need 2 medium sized sweet potatoes. You can either peel the potatoes or keep the skin on for extra crisp, and less prep work!
Olive oil: You’ll only need 1 to 2 tablespoons to coat the wedges, but I recommend not trying to skip it. It will help the wedges to crisp and taste like regular fried or roasted sweet potatoes.
Of course, you can use a different kind of oil if you prefer.
Dried herbs: I tend to use a mixed dried herb blend such as mixed Italian herbs. However, use whatever you have or enjoy. Basil, oregano, or thyme are all good options.
Paprika and cumin: I feel like a touch of both of these enhances the natural sweetness of the wedges while adding contrasting warmth and depth of flavor. Mmm!
Garlic and onion powder: If you don’t have either of these, you could simply double the other one. Fresh garlic tends to burn easily in the air fryer, so I don’t recommend using that instead (and who needs the extra effort!).
Salt and pepper: As always, I’ve suggested an amount, but you can adapt it to taste.
Top Ingredients Tip
Why not make a quick batch of this all-purpose seasoning to keep in your pantry rather than adding the herbs and spices above separately?
How to make sweet potato wedges in your air fryer
Step 1: Peel the sweet potatoes if you’d like to. If you’d like to keep the skins on, scrub them well.
Step 2: Then slice into small wedges around 1cm thick. To do this, I usually cut the sweet potato in half or thirds first (across the width), then in half again (this time lengthwise). Then I slice each of these pieces into smaller wedges.
Step 3: At this point, I recommend blotting the sweet potato wedges so that they are are as dry as possible. Then toss them well in a bowl together with the oil and seasoning.
Step 4: Put half to three quarters of the wedges into your air fryer basket (depending on the size). You can have a few overlapping, but don’t crowd the basket too much.
This is OK, for example:
Remember to give the basket a shake half way through cooking and to keep a close eye on them towards the end of the cooking time.
Helen’s Top Tips
- Size of the wedges: Your slicing doesn’t have to be perfect, but try to get the wedges roughly the same size (about 1cm thick). You also want them to be small enough to become tender on the inside in the same time that the outsides crisp up..
- To get the best crisp: Make sure you blot the raw wedges with some absorbent kitchen paper or a clean tea towel to dry them. Make sure the wedges are well tossed with the oil.
- Don’t crowd the air fryer. You need a bit of air around each wedge so that they roast rather than steam. Better to make two batches if you have a smaller air fryer.
- Cooking time: 15 minutes is about right in my small(ish) basket style air fryer for crispy but not burnt wedges. Toss around half way through cooking. In an oven style air fryer, they might take a bit longer – closer to 20 minutes. The key is to keep a close eye on them from about 10 minutes until you learn how long they take in your particular air fryer.
Serving ideas and tips
- Serve immediately. I find that sweet potato wedges or fries lose their crisp fairly quickly, so do serve them right away.
- If serving as an appetizer, party food or snack, consider serving with sour cream and sweet chili sauce on the side! Alternatively, how about a 5-minute dip such as dill Greek yogurt dip or Greek feta red pepper dip? Or any favorite dip!
- Serve as a side dish with any of the ideas below, pizza (made with Greek yogurt dough!), Greek lamb chops or other baked or grilled meat, or any main dish! Most of these happen to be chicken, but my top choice would be the salmon! If you want to cook the main in your air fryer as well, cook that first, then cook the wedges.
Recipe FAQs
If you have a basket style air fryer, there’ll be enough for 2 to 3 people. If you have a really large air fryer or an oven style air fryer, there will be 3 to 4 servings. There should be some wedges left over. You can either make another batch (so you have enough for 4 to 6 people), or you can freeze the leftovers for another time!
Yes, you can. Just make sure the raw wedges are dry before tossing in the oil and seasoning. It’s best to ‘flash freeze’ them by spreading them out on a baking pan first and freezing for 2 to 3 hours before putting them into a freezer bag or container. You can air fry them straight from frozen! You’ll just need to add a bit of cooking time on. Air fry for 18 to 22 minutes, or until crisped but not burnt.
You can, but I don’t recommend it. The relatively small amount of oil will help to make the wedges nice and crispy and browned.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
Ingredients
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, (Either wash and peel, or scrub and leave on the skin.)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, (1 to 2 tablespoons)
For the seasoning
- 1 teaspoon mixed dried herbs, (Italian herbs are ideal, but feel free to use any that you have e.g. basil, oregano, thyme, or a mixture)
- ¾ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
Instructions
- Cut the sweet potatoes into small wedges. I usually do this by cutting the sweet potato into 2 or 3 pieces (across the width). Then I slice each of these pieces in half lengthwise, and then into smaller wedges around 1cm thick.
- Preheat the air fryer to 390F/200C. Meanwhile, dry the wedges either with kitchen paper or in a clean tea towel. Then toss them well with the oil and seasonings in a large bowl.
- Add the wedges to the air fryer basket. You may need to do this in two batches. A few may overlap but be careful not to overcrowd the basket. Air fry for 15 minutes, shaking the basket half way through, or until the wedges are crisped and golden on the outside and soft inside. Keep a close eye on them towards the end of cooking to make sure they don't burn.
- Serve immediately either as an appetizer with dips (sour cream and sweet chili sauce work well) or as an easy, tasty side dish.
