Angel food cake with strawberries

When I’m entertaining guests, I want dessert to be as simple as can be. Preferably I want to prep it ahead, and bonus points if I don’t need the oven to make it.

This simple angel food strawberry dessert ticks all these boxes and more. All you have to do is thread strawberries and cubes of angel cake (or any cake, really!) onto wooden skewers. Melt and stir chocolate, cream and butter together in the microwave for the not-to-be-skipped chocolate dipping sauce, and dessert is done.

I think we can all agree that this 10-minute dessert would go down well at a summer BBQ – or even around a campfire instead of (or as well as!) s’mores. It’s so easy to make that your kids could make it for you while you focus on the mains!

📌Recipe snapshot

  • ‘Miracle’ 10-minute, 5-ingredient, no-bake recipe
  • What you’ll need: Just strawberries, store bought cake, chocolate, cream, butter and wooden skewers
  • Skill level: Super easy
  • Servings: 4 to 5 (or double the recipe for more)
  • Perfect for: BBQs, campfires, after-school treats

About the ingredients

You’ll find a full list of ingredients with amounts in the recipe card below. But here’s a summary of what you need to know.

All the ingredients needed to make strawberry and cake skewers, labelled, including wooden skewers, strawberries, cream and butter, cubes of vanilla cake, and chocolate chunks.

Skewers: I use thin, medium-sized wooden skewers. You’ll usually find them in the BBQ aisle in the supermarket. Metal skewers should work too, as long as they aren’t too thick.

Strawberries: This recipe is perfect in spring and summer when strawberries are at their best! I usually cut medium to large strawberries in half before threading them onto the skewers. If you can only get small ones, you can simply use the whole strawberry rather than cutting it in half.

Cake: I love to use angel food cake for this dessert since it has a light and fluffy texture that doesn’t overshadow the beautiful fresh strawberries. It also grips the skewer well since it’s springy and spongy.

However, it is possible to use any kind of pre-made store bought cake. I sometimes use a pink and white angel food cake that’s available where I live. It looks pretty! Alternatively, you could use madeira cake, pound cake, or lemon cake. Anything that you can cut into cubes will be great.

Chocolate: The simple chocolate dipping sauce is a non-negotiable! I prefer dark chocolate for a sauce that isn’t too sweet, but you can use milk chocolate or white chocolate instead if you prefer. Even chocolate chips will work if that’s what you have.

Cream and a little butter: You’ll heat these together in your microwave, then let the chocolate melt into it to make the delicious sauce!

How to make an angel food cake with strawberries dessert

It couldn’t be easier!

Start by cutting the strawberries in half (unless they are very small in which case leave them whole).

Then cut the cake into cubes that are about the same width as the strawberry halves.

Thread the pieces onto the skewers – a piece of strawberry followed by a piece of cake, and so on.

Someone's hands threading half strawberries and cubes of cake onto a skewer, with more strawberry skewers below on a plate.

Now make the quick chocolate sauce.

First, melt the butter into the cream in the microwave. A glass jug works well. Otherwise you can use a small microwave safe bowl.

Then break the chocolate up. Drop it into the warm mixture and leave it for a few minutes to melt.

Stir to make a smooth sauce. If you like you can add a pinch of salt too to balance out the sweetness.

I like to pour the sauce into little individual bowls so that everyone can have their own to dunk their ‘kebabs’ into. As you can see from the photo at the top, you can also drizzle some of the chocolate over the skewers before serving if you like!

I can’t see anyone complaining whichever way you serve this at your next outdoor event!

Helen’s Top Tips

  • You can prep the skewers ahead a few hours, then keep them in an airtight container until ready to serve. You can even make the sauce ahead, then gently reheat it in the microwave before serving.
  • If you have any leftover chocolate sauce, cover and pop into the fridge. After a short while, you’ll be able to roll them into delicious chocolate truffles!
  • Try variations with different kinds of berries (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries), different soft fruits such as pineapple or mango, and different types of cake such as brownie bites! You could even make patriotic 4th July versions with alternate red (strawberries), white (cake), and blueberries.

Angel Food Cake With Strawberries (& Chocolate Sauce)

Juicy strawberries and fluffy and light cubes of angel food cake threaded onto skewers and served with warm chocolate dipping sauce. You'll be everyone's best friend if you serve this 10-minute angel food strawberry dessert at your next BBQ!
Prep: 10 minutes
Total: 10 minutes
Servings: 4 to 5

Ingredients

For the strawberry skewers

  • 10 wooden skewers
  • 24 strawberries, cut in half (about 1 pound)
  • 1 pound angel food cake, (or madeira, vanilla or lemon cake) cut into cubes a similar width to the strawberries

For the warm chocolate dipping sauce

  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream, (or thickened cream or double cream)
  • ounces chocolate, (I like dark chocolate, but use milk instead if you like. If using chocolate chips, semi-sweet or bitter sweet work well.)
  • 1 pinch salt, (optional, for balance)

Instructions

  • Thread the half-strawberries and cake cubes onto the skewers alternately.
10 wooden skewers, 24 strawberries, 1 pound angel food cake
  • To make the sauce, combine the butter and cream in a small glass jug or bowl. Heat in the microwave in 30-second bursts until warm and the butter has melted. Stir well.
¼ cup butter, 1 cup heavy cream
  • Break up the chocolate into pieces, if using a bar. Drop into the warm butter and cream mixture and let melt for a few minutes. Then stir until smooth. At this point you can also stir in a pinch of salt if you like.
3½ ounces chocolate, 1 pinch salt
  • Pour the sauce into little individual bowls for people to dip their strawberries and cake into.

Notes

Make-ahead instructions: You can make the dessert a few hours ahead. Just assemble the skewers then store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to serve. You can also make the sauce in advance, however you may wish to re-warm the sauce again in the microwave just before serving.
Alternatives: Try different fruits, cake, and chocolate. Ideas: pineapple, mango, blueberries, other berries, lemon cake, chocolate cake.
Leftover sauce: Keep covered in the fridge. You can then take spoonfuls of it and form into balls for simple but delicious chocolate truffles (roll in a bit of cocoa powder if you like). Alternatively, enjoy drizzled over ice cream, cake, or use as a dipping sauce for donuts!
