To make the sauce, combine the butter and cream in a small glass jug or bowl. Heat in the microwave in 30-second bursts until warm and the butter has melted. Stir well.
¼ cup butter, 1 cup heavy cream
Break up the chocolate into pieces, if using a bar. Drop into the warm butter and cream mixture and let melt for a few minutes. Then stir until smooth. At this point you can also stir in a pinch of salt if you like.
3½ ounces chocolate, 1 pinch salt
Pour the sauce into little individual bowls for people to dip their strawberries and cake into.

Notes
Make-ahead instructions: You can make the dessert a few hours ahead. Just assemble the skewers then store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to serve. You can also make the sauce in advance, however you may wish to re-warm the sauce again in the microwave just before serving. Alternatives: Try different fruits, cake, and chocolate. Ideas: pineapple, mango, blueberries, other berries, lemon cake, chocolate cake. Leftover sauce: Keep covered in the fridge. You can then take spoonfuls of it and form into balls for simple but delicious chocolate truffles (roll in a bit of cocoa powder if you like). Alternatively, enjoy drizzled over ice cream, cake, or use as a dipping sauce for donuts!
