A virtually no-effort dessert!

Chocolate dipping sauce is what I make when I have guests coming over but I don’t really want to make a dessert. So Instead I heat cream and butter together in my microwave, then stir in some good quality chocolate. I pour it into little bowls and serve on a platter with a selection of goodies to dip into it – seasonal fruit, cubes of cake, donuts, churros, marshmallows, cookies… anything!

This will take you literally 5 minutes to make. It will have you wondering why you’ve ever bought chocolate sauce from the store. If you’re lucky, you’ll also have leftovers to reheat and drizzle over ice cream, pancakes or waffles the next day.

Or perhaps you could just gobble it up straight off a spoon!

About the ingredients

You’ll find a full list of ingredients with amounts in the recipe card below. But here’s a summary of what you need to know.

Dark chocolate: I usually reach for dark chocolate for a sauce that’s less sweet. Milk chocolate will give you a sweeter, creamier sauce. White chocolate will work, too. You can even use chocolate chips if that’s what you have on hand.

Cream: Use heavy cream (or thickened cream or double cream) for the richest, most delicious results.

Butter: The butter adds richness and gloss and gives the sauce a silky, luxurious texture. It’s what makes the difference between a ganache and a chocolate sauce like this. Use salted butter if you have it to balance the sweetness. Alternatively, use unsalted butter and throw in a pinch of salt!

How to make a chocolate dipping sauce

If you have a microwave, you won’t believe how quick and easy it is to make this simple chocolate dipping sauce in three simple steps. Even if you don’t, it’s so simple made in a glass bowl suspended over a hot pan of water (just make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water).

Step 1: The first step is to melt the cream and butter together in the microwave. A glass jug works well. Otherwise you can use a small microwave safe bowl.

I usually heat in 30-second bursts (two to three times) until the cream is heated and the butter is melted.

Step 2: Stir well. Then break up the chocolate into pieces and drop it in.

Step 3: Leave it for a few minutes to melt, then stir until smooth. I like to stir in a pinch of salt at this point (unless you’re using salted butter, in which case don’t).

Helen’s Top Tips

  • If you’re feeling adventurous, you can give the sauce extra flavor with orange zest, a teaspoon of instant coffee granules, or a quarter teaspoon of almond or mint extract. Alternatively, whisk in a tablespoon or two of peanut butter, or swirl in some of this raspberry puree after cooking!
  • Perhaps surprisingly, you can make the chocolate sauce ahead of time (up to a week, in fact!). Just cover well and refrigerate. When you’re ready to serve it, simply reheat gently in the microwave – or in a small saucepan if you prefer. If it seems too thick, just add a drizzle more cream or milk.
  • If you don’t have any small bowls to pour the sauce into, try using espresso cups instead!
  • Use skewers or little forks for dipping things like marshmallows and fruit (see below for more ideas!). These fondue style warmers (paid link!) are a fun way to serve the chocolate dip to guests with a selection of goodies for dipping!

Dipping ideas (and other ways to use it)

Here are some of my favorite things to dip into this easy chocolate dipping sauce:

  • donuts
  • churros
  • angel food cake with strawberries, or any kind of fruit skewers (perfect for BBQs!)
  • marshmallows
  • fruit (banana slices, pineapple, apple, pear, strawberries, raspberries, orange segments, mango… anything you like!)
  • cookies or biscotti
  • brownie bites or cubes of store bought cake
  • pretzels or pretzel sticks
  • nuts
  • a dessert platter with a mixture of any or all of the above!

And some other ways to serve it:

I could go on and on. But I’m sure that you can think of even more ideas of your own!

Recipe FAQs

Why did my chocolate sauce turn grainy?

I have never had this issue, but it is possible for homemade chocolate sauce to turn grainy. Usually this happens if it’s overheated or water gets into it. If this does happen, try whisking in a little extra warm cream until smooth again.

How long will the sauce stay liquid for dipping?

About 20 to 30 minutes. When it starts to thicken, you can simply warm it gently again to loosen it up. In my opinion, warm is best, but the sauce can also be served at room temperature.

Is chocolate dipping sauce suitable for freezing?

It can be, although it can lose a bit of its smoothness when defrosted. I suggest letting it defrost in the fridge, then re-warming it gently and whisking again until smooth. If it seems too thick, simply whisk in a little more warm cream or milk.

5-Minute Chocolate Dipping Sauce

This warm chocolate dipping sauce will be your last-minute dessert life saver! It'll take you barely 5 minutes to warm cream and butter together, then melt chocolate into it to create a smooth, silky and creamy sauce. Use for dipping fruit, donuts, or cake, or drizzle over ice cream, cakes and more!
Prep: 3 minutes
Cook: 2 minutes
Total: 5 minutes
Servings: 4 to 5

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 cup heavy cream, (or thickened cream or double cream)
  • ¼ cup butter, salted or unsalted (if salted, skip the pinch of salt listed below)
  • ounces chocolate, (I like dark chocolate, but use milk instead if you like. If using chocolate chips, semi-sweet or bitter sweet work well.)
  • 1 pinch salt, (optional, for balance)

Instructions

  • Combine the butter and cream in a small glass jug or bowl. Heat in the microwave in 30-second bursts until warm and the butter has melted. Stir well.
¼ cup butter, 1 cup heavy cream
  • Break up the chocolate into pieces, if using a bar. Drop into the warm butter and cream mixture and let melt for a few minutes. Then stir until smooth. At this point you can also stir in the pinch of salt if you like.
3½ ounces chocolate, 1 pinch salt
  • Pour the sauce into little individual bowls for people to dip all kinds of goodies into! Alternatively, drizzle over ice cream, cakes, cheesecakes… anything you like!

Notes

Alternative warming method: If you don’t have a microwave, you can melt the butter into the cream in a glass bowl suspended over a saucepan of boiling water. Then drop the chocolate in to melt as in the microwave version. Don’t let the glass bowl touch the hot water.
Make-ahead instructions: You can make the sauce up to a week in advance, however re-warm the sauce again gently in the microwave just before serving. If it seems too thick, just drizzle in a little more warm cream.
Serving ideas: Try different fruits, cake or brownie bites, donuts, churros, biscotti, nuts, and anything else you can think of for dipping! How about making a dessert platter with the chocolate sauce and lots of things to dip in? Alternatively, use the sauce to drizzle over cakes or ice cream, or layer it in a parfait or sundae.
