scrumptious + yummy = scrummy … in case you were wondering!
New here?
Hopefully you can find something you’d like to try today. 99% of my recipes are quick, easy, mostly healthy…
…and, above all, tasty (well, I try at least!)
I hope you enjoy having a good look around. You can find a list of all my recipes here, or maybe you’re looking for easy meals for the whole family, something to take along to a party, a quick and easy dessert… or something Greek (my favourite!).
It’s hard to pick absolute favourites, but if I had to I’d go for this chicken and butternut squash satay curry, these low sugar Greek yogurt blueberry muffins, this 6-ingredient Swedish chocolate cake, and these best Greek potatoes.
These recipes are some of our go-tos, and I truly hope they become yours too.
Enjoy!
A small disclosure…
I now live in Australia, but I have spent many years in the Greek sunshine stuffing myself to contentment with Greek salads, moussaka and ‘tiropites’ and ‘spanakopites’ (delicious cheese and spinach pies).
So my recipes may sometimes feature a little too much feta cheese!
I always love to hear from you!

I love your recipes! I especially love the simple ingredients, most of which I already have in my pantry/fridge. I have just started cooking, so being able to use what I already have makes cooking/baking really fun for me because I feel like I can make good food! I really appreciate your effort and culinary passion.
Helen says
Oh thank you so much, Toony! I’m so flattered that you’re enjoying my recipes so much, and that you took the time to leave this comment. It’s really helpful for me to know exactly how my recipes help people. You’ve made my day! 🙂

Hi again Helen,
I just thought I let you know that I’ve just attempted your sticky apple and ginger cake today, and while yummy I’m afraid it just isn’t pretty enough to be shared (something to do with me spreading white chocolate over the top like cement mortar rather than drizzling delicately) I would like to ask for your help with one aspect please, I live in Italy and self raising flour just doesn’t seem to be available so I added baking powder (10g) to the flour and added no extra. There does however seem to be a “taste” of raising agent lingering in the cake, do you have any suggestions regarding using ‘plain’ flour and a raising agent instead of self raising?
Helen says
Hi Julie! Thank you so much for letting me know how you got on with the recipe. Yes, definitely try drizzling over the chocolate next time! When I’ve occasionally run out of self raising flour I’ve made my own so you should be fine doing that for this recipe. I usually add 1.5 teaspoons baking powder and 0.25 teaspoons salt to every cup of flour. Make sure you mix it into the flour well and don’t accidentally add too much and in theory you should be OK! 🙂

I’ve left you a comment using your contact form: Internet was playing up and I was too fed up trying to scroll down!
I had hoped the comment would get published: I so enjoyed making the impossible quiche. I’m very pleased to have discovered your excellent site.
Greetings from Perth W.A.
Helen says
Hello Treay! You know I’m in Perth too, right?! I’m so glad you enjoyed the quiche! It’s getting a lot of love from Australia! Do let me know if there are any particular kind of recipes you’d enjoy seeing here! 🙂

Hi Helen, Love your blog. I’m often searching for recipes for this and that, and just when I think I’ve found the perfect recipe….. I’m frustrated by the measurements being in US Cups! Now I’ve found your blog which can display both!!! – Fantastic.
I’ll be a regular visitor from now on.
I’m just off to make the Apple Cake, I feel that now we live in Italy this should be my ‘go to’ pud. I’m going to mix in a few figs with the apples as our little tree has given us so many this year and I’m looking for ways to put them to good use… any suggestions?
Helen says
Hi Julie. It’s so lovely to hear from you, and even lovelier to hear that you love the blog! You couldn’t give me a bigger compliment! It’s really interesting to hear you say you like the metric measurements. To be honest I was thinking of switching them so that the metric measurements are the default because I worry that the conversion button isn’t obvious enough.
I think you’ll enjoy the apple cake! It’s super easy but quite impressive looking at the same time! I’m just about to publish an updated (and hopefully much better!) version of an apple crumble pie I also make. It’s not quite as easy as the apple pie, but still very simple as there’s no pre-baking.
As for the figs… well, firstly I’m envious that you have a fig tree. How wonderful! We actually live in Australia now and I can see a big old lemon tree over the fence in the neighbour’s garden. It’s my (very humble) ambition to get one too. In the meantime though I’m pretty happy because these same neighbours often bring us passion fruit from their garden. They are truly divine and I can easily polish off 3 or 4 in one go!
I have to say I’ve never made a recipe with figs in it, but I did recently see some healthy date – cacao – peanut butter type raw bars with figs pressed into the top. I bet that would be pretty tasty! Also this post from another blog has some simple (very simple!) dessert ideas with figs. If I had some lovely fresh figs though I think I’d go for this fig and almond cake by the wonderful Ottolenghi! 🙂
Barbara says
Hello Helen – could you please tell me whether you use
U.K. 15ml tablespoons or Australian 20ml tablespoons? Wouldn’t it be great if the whole world went metric! Thank you for your help. Greetings from Melbourne. Barbara.
Helen says
Hi Barbara! Oooh, good question! I just checked and I am in fact using a 15ml tablespoon – so UK/US tablespoons. To be honest though I’m of the ‘a little bit of this and a little bit of that’ school of thought, so it probably wouldn’t be disastrous to use a tiny bit more of anything in most of my recipes 😉
Ally says
Hi Helen,
Loving your site and all the recipes I have tried so far. I’ve been saving the recipes but noticed that the pictures do not seem to attach to the print function and would love to have the pictures there to help identify the recipes. Is there anything you can do with the web team to enhance the print function please? Looking forward to more cooking with you 🙂
Helen says
Hello Ally! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I’m SO glad you’re enjoying the recipes! As for the photo on the print page, I have a feeling that’s an easy fix. I’ll try to fix it right now and be right back… 😉
Helen says
Just made a quick change, Ally, so you should be able to print the recipe WITH a photo now 🙂

Hello
I made your blueberry Greek yoghurt muffins yesterday and they were scrumptious. Today I’m trying the sticky blueberry lemon curd cake and I’m sure it will be equally good. I have a question about the muffins, I would like to substitute the blueberries for raspberries and also include some white chocolate. Can you advise me what quantity of white chocolate to use and how I would incorporate it into your recipe.
Many thanks.
Fiona
Helen says
Hi Fiona! So pleased to hear you made the blueberry muffins! I make those regularly and they always seem to turn out well.
As for substituting the blueberries for raspberries, I really don’t see why not! And white chocolate would go fabulously. Personally I’d eye-ball the chocolate, stirring them in at the same time as the raspberries. Start with half a cup and see how you go – if you feel like that’s not enough, add in a few more! 😉
Fiona Rushworth says
Hi Helen, thanks for the quick reply. I made your sticky blueberry and lemon curd cake yesterday and it was great. I cooked it at fan 140 as I wasn’t sure if the recipe stated fan oven or not. The base was just a touch cakey still but I didn’t want to cook it longer in case it dried out. Should I increase the temp next time or the cooking time. Thanks and I’m loving your recipes 😊
Helen says
Hi Fiona – thanks so much for popping back to let me know how you got on! I’d say go back up to 160C and see how you go with that next time. I don’t think it matters that you have a fan oven – I do too! Good luck, and thank you so much for the compliment. I’m so happy you’re enjoying the recipes! Anything you’d like to see more of?

I love your website, as do many of my Grecofile chums do too – it comes from the heart.
I think I have been travelling to the Greek Islands for about half my adult life and it was while working as a chef in Aghia Galini, Crete that I went mad. But Greece has a hold. My wife thinks I may have been Greek in a previous life.
If you get time between travelling and cooking, please make a visit to my own website, you may like a couple of the recipes there.
Your spanakopitas were amazing.
Kala va pervas!
Helen says
Hi Tony, so great to hear from you, and I’ll definitely check out your site. I miss Greece very much, but still making and eating the food somewhat makes up for not being there any more. I’m really happy you enjoyed the spanakopites!

Hi Brigitte! Thanks so much for taking the time to pop back and leave your lovely feedback. You’ve made my day! This is one of our favourite meals too and in fact we only just had it again a couple of nights ago for dinner!

Just made the one-pan spicy thai peanut chicken and it turned out great. Definitely great recipes, just bookmarked loads more lol
Thanks Helen,

Hello Don. So happy to hear you enjoyed this – thank you so much for letting me know. This is one of my favourites too. I hope you enjoy the other recipes you’ve chosen!

Have you blocked me from commenting on your blog? Don’t blame you. I made a comment twice yesterday about yr Spanish omelette and neither one appeared. Maybe a wee glitch for you to look into?
Helen says
Ann! Your comments had indeed gone into my spam folder. No idea why, but the site now knows that you most definitely aren’t spam. Thanks again for flagging this up – I’d never have known, so it’s a lesson for me to check every once in a while. Please do let me know if you ever have the same problem again 🙂

Hope you and Mr Scrummy are well. We miss you guys. Love seeing your recipes pop up. As I’ve made the transition to Paleo – do you do many of them?
Good job. I think about you every time I make something, and think, I should take a photo – but I never do. ha. One day. xx
Helen says
Shelley! We miss you too! Thanks so much for popping over here and taking a look. Really enjoying it … I haven’t delved into the world of Paleo at all though, really. You will have to educate me on what it’s all about.
You definitely should start taking photos of your food and sticking them in your lovely scrapbook of recipes. Mmmm! xxx

Hi Helen. I’m the other way around. I lived in Perth when I was younger. After having lived in 8 countries (UK included) I currently live in Barcelona, and shall slowly be making my way back to Australia 🙂 Your food looks great, I want to try making your recent cheesecake post!
Helen says
Hello, Sofia! That’s so interesting that you are in a similar situation to me 🙂 It’s great to get the chance to travel, and I did think Perth was a lovely place, but I’m really happy to be making my way back to the UK for a while now. I’ll probably change my mind after a few weeks of the horrible grey drizzle we get there! So glad you liked the cheesecake – it was really tasty and a little healthier than many cheesecakes. I’ll hop on over to your blog now to have a look around there! So great to ‘meet’ you!
Chrissy says
Fun stuff! I’m sort of doing the same thing, and I can’t wait to see what international goodies you’ve found!
Helen says
Hello, Chrissy, and thanks for taking the time to read! I’ll be heading back to the UK ‘permanently’ (?) in a few months, but I’m guessing that I’ll always make opportunities for plenty of travel … and food sampling! I’ll head on over to your blog now to check it out too 🙂
Chrissy says
This is sort of way last minute, but I just thought of it now. I think I’m going to try and squeeze Greece in before I leave for Nepal next week. Top three favorite foods? I figured you were the gal to ask!
Helen says
Wow, Chrissy! Yes, of course I’m your girl! What a shame I have literally just left Greece – I could have shown you around. OK, top 3 foods – tricky. I’d say a simple lunch of Greek salad and bread overlooking the sea or on the slopes of the Acropolis, a pitta with chicken gyro (probably from a neighbourhood shop, not a city centre one) and a ‘tyri saganaki’ (fried cheese) with honey and a little glass of ouzo from a little place called ‘dioskouri’ in plaka on the slopes of the Acropolis (careful, there are 2 restaurants with the same name, but you want the one nearest to the Acropolis). These 3 things are all very simple, but they are must-tries. Enjoy! 🙂
Chrissy says
Great! I’m not actually going to Greece, just food-going-to-Greece. However, saganaki was definitely on my list of things to make, as was pita. I wasn’t sold on the salad, but maybe it’ll be nice and easy. I am real-heading to Nepal on Thursday night, so I’m trying to make stuff for when I get back. Must pack. Eek! Thanks for your help!
Helen says
Ahhh … OK, I didn’t realise you weren’t actually going to Greece. That changes things! Try moussaka then … or, actually, I’m just about to post a Greek recipe tomorrow so you can wait for that, too! ‘Bekri meze’ is good, too – a beautiful tender pork dish in a sauce. Good luck! And wow, Nepal! Looking forward to your thoughts about the food there! 🙂
