I’m a big fan of chocolate bark. It’s such a quick and easy gift to make for all kinds of occasions. Why not give this brightly coloured fun version as a gift… or make a sneaky batch just for you?

It would be rude not to eat chocolate at Easter, wouldn’t it now? Or on any special occasion, really.

Chocolate bark is the perfect easy food gift

I love how chocolate bark is…

A. Super super easy to make. Easy for you to make together with your kids. In fact easy for them to make by themselves. Just – so – easy.

B. impressive looking! Yes, really. Despite the fact it takes barely 10 minutes to make.

C. a really good, simple, and not-lame-at-all last minute gift idea.

D. a blank canvas for any budding creatives out there! Just chuck it all on, or make a masterpiece out of it, whichever suits you better!

E. perfect for any occasion. This version is for Easter, I suppose, but really you can make it any time of year. Just vary the toppings according to what you like. Christmas? No worries – throw Christmas themed decorations on top. Just for a birthday? Throw on whatever you have!

Chocolate bark makes a perfect last minute gift – especially for a host of a dinner party. Just package it in a simple see-through food gift bag, and tie at the top with a ribbon.

How to make chocolate bark

Easter chocolate bark before being broken into pieces on baking paper from above.
What it looks like before you smash it up into pieces!
  1. Melt chocolate, which I always do in the microwave in about a minute and a half.
  2. Pour and spread the chocolate over a baking tray lined with baking paper.
  3. Decorate in whichever way you wish.
  4. Leave to set either in a cool room or in the fridge.
  5. Smash up into pieces, either with your hands or a knife.
  6. If you want to give it as a gift, pack it into a nice box lined with baking paper, or a clear food bag tied with a ribbon.

Variations

If you like you can mix some goodies in with the chocolate before you pour it out.

I’ve made many different versions of chocolate bark in the past. Here are a few of my favourite ideas:

  1. cookies and cream (white chocolate with Oreos mixed in)
  2. Dark chocolate with caramelized orange slices and almonds
  3. mango and pistachio (luxury chocolate bark!)
  4. toffee apple
  5. marbled white and milk chocolate
  6. 10-minute Christmas rocky road (you have to try this – easily adaptable to other occasions!)

Other topping ideas could include different dried fruits, different sweets/candies such as M&Ms, baking sprinkles and other decorations, cookie/biscuit crumbs, and even edible flowers!

You can even mix a few drops of natural food colouring into white chocolate to make some rainbow chocolate bark.

How to make Easter chocolate bark

To make the Easter bark you see in today’s post, I simply spread white chocolate over milk chocolate, then sprinkled with slightly crushed mini chocolate Easter eggs, and… jelly beans!

By all means skip the jelly beans, but I love the combo of the sticky candy with the chocolate.

Ridiculously easy Easter chocolate bark

I love chocolate bark! Just melt chocolate, spread it out onto baking paper, and decorate to your heart’s content. This version is perfect for Easter and takes just moments to make.
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 2 hours
Total: 2 hours 15 minutes
Servings: 20

Ingredients

  • 7 ounces milk chocolate
  • 7 ounces white chocolate
  • Easter decorations of your choice e.g. pastel-coloured mini chocolate eggs*, gold-coloured mini eggs (available in UK!), pastel-coloured M&Ms, multi-coloured sprinkles, jelly beans

To Package

  • Clear food gift bags, ribbons and gift tags (optional)

Instructions

  • Melt the milk chocolate in a jug or small bowl in the microwave in 30-second bursts (or in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, making sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl).
  • Pour and spread the chocolate on a baking tray covered with baking paper. Pop the tray in the freezer for a few minutes to begin to harden.
  • Meanwhile, melt the white chocolate, then pour / spread over the top of the milk chocolate. Decorate as you wish.
  • Leave to cool and harden completely (you can speed this process up by popping into the fridge for a short while), then break the bark up into pieces.

Notes

*I like to lightly crush the chocolate mini eggs before sprinkling over the chocolate. I pop them into a clear bag and hit them with the end of a rolling pin. I tried doing this in a food processor but found they get totally obliterated rather than just broken up!
If you prefer you can swirl the white chocolate into the milk before decorating – this works just as well as keeping the layers separate.
